WANT TO PLAY IN COMPETITIONS?

Hand in 3 scorecards (counter signed by a club member). You will then get an official handicap. Pay your membership fees & you will then be eligible to play in any of the year’s events as well as the men’s night sweeps.
The dates of all competitions are outlined on a fixtures card available at the Bar or log onto the club’s excellent website.
Also - watch out for the notice board at the front entrance for entry forms/posters/messages & starting times.

Listed below is a description of the various competition formats for your information.

Spartan Cup – (First competition of the Season) – This is an 18 hole event awarded to the best Nett score.  Entrants must have played three times in the winter league.           (One round may include the Tanco Cup match against Kirkwall).
Loganair stableford – The best three round totals from a competitor out of a possible six stableford rounds.
Edinburgh Quaich & Ackroyd Cups – Each of these competitions involve two qualifying rounds of strokeplay, with the best 16 scores in the Quaich & best 8 scores in the Ackroyd going on to compete in knockout matchplay with strokes being given/taken on the full difference of your opponent’s handicap.      The Quaich final is over 36 holes. The Ackroyd  final  is over 18 holes.
High Handicap/Beginners Competitions  – a series of 6 week competitions played over 9 holes & awarded  to the best Eclectic  score over six rounds. Open to MEN with a handicap of 20 or over or anyone yet to receive a handicap.
Handicap Cups – Has three sections: 0-10, 11-17, and 18+. In the first two sections the best three Nett totals out of a maximum of four rounds to count. In the 18+ section only the two best rounds are counted.
Foinaven Trophy – is played over 18 holes & awarded to the best Nett total on the day.
Orkney Match Play Championship – This competition involve two qualifying rounds of strokeplay, 18 holes each on Stromness and Kirkwall. The best 16 gross totals will then play knockout match –play.
The best 16 nett totals also qualify to play knockout match-play. The finals are over 36 holes.
Mcvitie and Price Cup – awarded to the best Nett total over four rounds.
Jubilee Cup – Played over 2 rounds on consecutive days, this cup is presented to the lowest Nett total.
Hamilton Cup – the Orkney strokeplay championship. Awarded to the best gross total over 36 holes held in alternate years at Stromness and Kirkwall. The Pit Stop Cup is held on the same day and is awarded to the lowest Nett total over the 36 holes.
The Club Championship - is held over 36 holes with the winner being the player who records the best Gross total.
The Nett Cup – is played alongside the Club Championship & goes to the best 36 hole Nett total.
R N L I Spoons  -  is an OPEN mixed (greensome) foursomes event. Played as part of the MIDNIGHT FOURSOMES
Over 50’s – Gross and Nett cups for Seniors members.  Held over two rounds with aggregate scores counting.
Summer League – Awarded to the best three Nett total scores from a maximum of six rounds.
Mackay Memorial Trophy – Is a Mixed Foursomes competition with the prize going to the lowest Nett score. Played in Kirkwall one year, Stromness the next. Same format as Mr & Mrs Trophy (see below).
Centenary Cup and Orkney Wholesalers Cups – Played on the same day. The Centenary Cup goes to the best Nett score and the OWL Cup goes to the best Gross score over 18 holes.
Mr & Mrs Trophy – All couples drive off, then best ball is chosen in 2 ball foursome format. Trophy is awarded to the married couple with the lowest score over the 18 holes (& still speaking to each other).
Putting Cup - 2 numbered markers are placed on 9 greens. Everyone starts from marker 1 and takes it in turn to putt from each marker. Scores are recorded for 18 holes. Lowest total wins.
Smith & Doloughan Cups – Held over two evenings. The Smith cup goes to the best Gross total and the Doloughan goes to the best Nett total over the 2 rounds.
Cupal Cup – is an 8 man team competition against Kirkwall along with an open sweep.
Royal Hotel Team event – is a four man team event played as a Texas Scramble.
Inter County – Matchplay against Shetland. All players welcome. Competition rotates between Stromness, Dale, Kirkwall and Whalsay  golf clubs.
Dewar Spence Cup – 2 rounds spread over 2 consecutive days & awarded to the best Nett 36 hole total.
Crazy Golf -  is a fun mixed competition played over a “cross country” course eg first tee to second green etc.
Final Fling – A fun 18 hole medal play competition.

 

Various sponsored “Open” competitions are held throughout the season with very generous Gross and Nett prizes.
